ASCL Northern Ireland comment on GCSE results

Commenting on today’s GCSE results, Robert Wilson, regional officer for the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) Northern Ireland, said:

“Congratulations to schools and pupils on the work and commitment that have gone into today’s results.

“This year sees the introduction of a new grading system for the revised qualifications operated by the Northern Ireland exams board, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA).

“This new system better aligns our familiar alphabetical grades with the new numerical 9-1 grading system in England, and this will help to ensure that there is a level playing field for our students in applying in the future for university courses and careers.

“We have worked very productively with CCEA to ensure that the new grading system in Northern Ireland is recognised by higher education providers so that no student will be disadvantaged.

“It is important to understand that the new alphabetical grading system does not directly match the previous structure and that it is not therefore possible to make year-on-year comparisons between the number of passes attained at the specific grades of A*, A, B, C* and C.”
