Catering students cook at speed

Under the supervision of the College’s Catering and Hospitality Course Leader Martyn Hollingsworth, Eleven Barnsley College Catering students helped produce and dispatch dishes that catered for more than 1,000 people, including chef and television presenter, James Martin and Princess Beatrice of York.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019 was held over a week with students cooking and preparing breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea with a variety of classic and modern cuisine such as caramelised onion and fig tart, poached eggs, cheeseboards and seafood.

Oliver Barrett, 19, said: “To be able to cater for these big numbers we had to be cooking and preparing at 6.30am every day. I am very honoured to have experienced this occasion and I’d like to thank my Barnsley College tutors for making it happen.”

Ellie Goodlad, 19, said: “The kitchen I was cooking in was next to the race track and from 9.00am till the end of the shift you could hear cars racing past. I’m very grateful to be able to attend this event and have developed my skills further and met some great people, and I would definitely do it again!”

Martyn Hollingsworth added: “Catering for such a high-profile event was a challenge for me and I’m highly-qualified and experienced, so for our students to take on the challenge and do such a wonderful job is extraordinary.

“They worked to professional standards throughout the week and were praised by industry experts for their diligence and remarkable work ethic.”
