Barton Peveril Sixth Form College student Tom Hughes (@bartonpeveril) has received a Commissioner’s Commendation for his outstanding support and commitment to 3rd Portchester Scout Group.
Hughes is the youngest person in the Fareham East District to have received a Commissioner’s Commendation, with only three other Commendations awarded in the District’s history.
The Barton Peveril student, who previously attended Portchester Community School, is a Young Team Leader for 3rd Portchester Scouts; in this role, Tom Hughes organises the troop’s programme of events, manages communications with parents and Scouts, and plans the troop’s camps.
Hughes was awarded the Commissioner’s Commendation by District Commissioner for Fareham East, Mike McHugh, and Group Scout Leader, Peter Leach, who nominated Hughes for the Commendation.
This is Tom Hughes’ twelfth year as a Scout and his fourth as a Young Scout Leader, during which time he has also been elected as the Youth Representative for the District Board of Trustees for Fareham East Scouts and County Board of Trustees for Hampshire County Scouts.
Speaking on his success, Tom Hughes said:
“It’s an honour to receive this Commendation for my work over the last four years with 3rd Portchester Scouts. Leaders choose to volunteer because they want to help develop the skills and see the growth within younger generations, so to receive recognition for how I’ve helped children in my community is truly amazing.”
After completing his studies at Barton Peveril, Tom Hughes is looking to become a Section Leader for a Scout Group whilst undertaking a degree in Global Humanitarian Studies at University.
