International education policy makers travel to Wales to learn about apprenticeships

Policy makers from around the world will visit Wales from 6 – 8 March 2018 to learn about the country’s apprenticeship system.

Sixty visitors will come from government education departments and the technical and vocational education and training sectors in Italy, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan.

They will take part in the British Council seminar Apprenticeships: Spotlight on Wales, which is being delivered in partnership with ColegauCymru / CollegesWales and will take place at Cardiff and Vale College.

Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan, will speak at the seminar about skill development, with particular reference to apprenticeships.

Jenny Scott, director of British Council Wales, said:

“The visitors will have the chance to hear from representatives of the Welsh education system, including Estyn and Pembrokeshire College as well as Welsh businesses. They will share how apprenticeships are designed in Wales and how the quality of the system is ensured. As well as welcoming the Minister, we are looking forward to hearing from members of the Welsh Government education department and Welsh employers, including Deloitte LLP Wales and Tata Steel.”

Iestyn Davies, chief executive of ColegauCymru / CollegesWales will talk about the importance of a three way partnership between government, employers and education to deliver a successful Welsh apprenticeship system.

Iestyn said:

“We are extremely pleased to be the British Council’s partner for this event in Cardiff and we are looking forward to showcasing our examples of innovative practice in the design and delivery of apprenticeships in Wales.”

The group will also visit Welsh businesses, including Panasonic, precision engineers Renishaw and BBC Wales, to see their apprenticeship schemes in action
