From education to employment


The ‘Diageo Learning for Life: Hospitality and Bartending programme’ has been presented with a Catering in Scotland (CIS) Excellence Award.
At the 2017 ceremony held at the Hilton Glasgow on 25 May, the programme received The Training and Employee Retention Award.
Recognising an exceptionally high degree of creativity, innovation and excellence in Scottish catering, hospitality and tourism, the CIS Excellence Awards offer some of the industry’s highest accolades.
Commenting on the programme’s success at the awards, Nicola Reid, Learning for Life Programme Manager: GB & Europe, said: “Learning for Life provides a solid platform for the training and development of young, unemployed people while helping them secure full time work in the sector.
“The hospitality industry in Scotland is thriving and continues to offer excellent career opportunities for young people with passion and drive. It’s extremely rewarding to have our contribution and dedication to the industry acknowledged.”
Since its launch in 2014, almost 900 unemployed people have graduated from the Diageo Learning for Life programme, which is offered across Scotland, with 81% of graduates going on to positive destinations, 76% of those successfully securing permanent roles in the hospitality sector.
The course provides young unemployed people with coaching, core employability skills and specialist bartender training, opening the door to a wide range of exciting career opportunities in the Scottish hospitality industry.
Learning for Life programmes are regularly held across Scotland, with students undertaking a six-week course delivered by The Springboard Charity, Diageo’s specialist training partner. This includes two weeks of valuable industry work experience in some of Scotland’s best hotels, bars and restaurants.
Inga McVicar, National Programmes Manager for Springboard said: “These awards are a real vote of confidence in the Learning for Life programme. The support we have received from local employers over the past three years has been fantastic and we really appreciate the time they give up to encourage young people on the courses to consider a career in the hospitality sector.
“We see such enthusiasm and commitment from our students, throughout every aspect of the course, and it’s great to see young people securing qualifications and engaging with the wider industry.”
