Matthew Boulton College student achieves silver medal success with his creative professional touch

Designing an eye-catching webpage, information booklet and an app in just three days has led to a Walsall student winning a silver medal. Luke Davies took part in World Skills UKā€™s graphic design competition sponsored by the Ideas Foundation.

The 17-year-old is now in the running to represent the UK in the international event taking place next year.

ā€œWinning a silver medal was totally amazing,ā€ said the student at Matthew Boulton College. ā€œIā€™ve had work deadlines before but nothing as intensive as this. Itā€™s showed me what I can achieve when I concentrate hard and push myself. Iā€™m really glad I got involved.ā€

The competitionā€™s design brief was set by the Ideas Foundation who encouraged the eight UK finalists to treat their work as a professional assignment being put together for a client.

ā€œWe wanted the finalists to bring their ideas to life across multiple communications channels, just as they would do if they were representing an individual or a business,ā€ explained Deborah Davidson, Programme Manager at Ideas Foundation. ā€œThe standard of work from each competitor was incredibly high. Lukeā€™s work ethic was particularly impressive so it will be exciting to see what he achieves in future.ā€

After he finishes his graphic design course, Luke hopes to study animation and special effects at university before pursuing a career in film.
ā€œBeing at World Skills and studying this course has taught me a lot about developing my ideas,ā€ continued Luke.

ā€œThe whole competition experience was great. A lot of school students at the event came over to us and were really interested in what we were doing. Itā€™s nice to think we might have inspired someone else to enter the competition and even take up a career in design.ā€

The WorldSkills Competition takes place every year in cities around the globe and is the largest international skills competition.
