From education to employment

Nelson Thornes learning space brings learning to life for A-level students

Nelson Thornes (www.nelsonthornes.com) has launched the new and exciting Nelson Thornes learning space (NTls). Nelson Thornes learning space has been designed and developed to improve personal achievement and exam success for every student by harnessing the latest technology in combination with exciting and engaging content. The new online learning environment provides personalised multimedia resources and assessments that are blended with Nelson Thornes’ textbooks to optimise students learning. NTls provides high quality interactive materials direct from the web, ensuring access to the very best learning resources, anywhere, any time.

The first products to be launched on the learning space are resources that blend with Nelson Thornes new AQA A-level textbooks matching the new specifications, with Key Stage 3 Science and Maths materials launching shortly.

The NTls online content is combined and linked to carefully written, targeted textbooks for each subject. Videos, animations and simulations reinforce and support textbooks enabling students to delve deeper into subject areas. Allowing students to support and extend their classroom teaching is a key factor in the creation of NTls. NTls engages learners with stimulating materials which appeal to different learning styles. There are videos, animations and simulations for visual learners and web quests and decision making tools, bringing learning to life and motivating students.

As a purely web-based service there are no installation or network management issues. Teachers can load their own content as well as creating learning routes through the readymade resources. It is simple to develop a truly personalised learning approach, allocating materials to individuals or groups. Students can share assignments, work collaboratively and message one another to share ideas through the learning space.

NTls provides a host of electronic tests and assessments online. These can be used to establish prior knowledge, to see how well a topic has been understood or to provide exam practice. Many tests are automatically marked so students can use them as and when they feel ready. Students are able to assess their own knowledge and skills and this means that they can take responsibility for their own learning. The system will send test results to the teacher and generate reports so that they have up-to-date information about each student’s progress and can compare results at the touch of a button.

Mary O’Connor, Managing Director of Nelson Thornes, commented: "Nelson Thornes learning space is a fantastic resource which will enhance teaching and learning and really help engage students and extend education outside of the classroom. We are committed to developing compelling resources that support new approaches to learning for the 21st century and NTls is a reflection of this."

An affordable and effective solution for schools and colleges, NTls is ideal for schools who want to provide their students with the best learning resources. Schools and colleges pay an annual licence; this is based on the size of the cohort and the subject content for A-level and number on roll for KS3.
