Skills Minister Nick Boles on employer contributions, functional skills and careers advice

FE News catches up with Nick Boles, Minister of State for Skills and Equalities at the AELP Autumn Conference. The Minister chats about three main themes, Functional Skills, Advice and Guidance and Employer Contributions.

The Minister discusses the development of Functional Skills, particularly how to increase the value of the qualification to employers, learners and the families of learners. Mr Boles highlights the importance of making Functional Skills to be as valued as a GCSE qualification for those who have difficulties completing GCSE English and maths to a minimum C grade. 

Mr Boles also discusses advice and guidance in schools, particularly on drawing the experience of local businesses into schools. He explains the importance of developing more than one route for young people to continually develop their career and qualifications.
