New principals start at Lewisham and Southwark colleges

THE NEW principals of Lewisham College and Southwark College have started in their roles to lead on the mission to unlock potential through learning in their South London communities.

Asfa Sohail, principal of Lewisham College and Annette Cast, principal of Southwark College, are already helping to address local challenges and provide opportunities for local people.

The creation of Lewisham College and Southwark College – both parts of NCG – is designed to allow both to cater better to the needs of the local communities through provision of a wide range of courses for school leavers and adults.

Chris Payne, interim chief executive at NCG, said:

“Lewisham College and Southwark College are part of NCG, which helps thousands of people every year to develop their careers and reach their full potential.

“NCG specialises in bridging between the world of education and business to give people the best opportunities possible.

“Asfa and Annette both have first class experience in developing education that meets the needs of learners and they are already having a positive impact.

“Lewisham College and Southwark College benefit from the collective strengths of NCG, including shared knowledge, cost efficiencies and innovation.

“We are now consulting with staff at both institutions to ensure we get the structures right.”

Asfa, who was previously vice principal of Havering College of Further and Higher Education, will develop Lewisham College.

She said: “NCG’s approach – which includes investing in employees and working with industry and government to address skills gaps – is important for Lewisham.

“We will provide routes for people to succeed and grow through jobs and offering courses that meet skills gaps.”

Annette Cast, who was previously pro vice chancellor at the University of East London and dean of the College of Professional Services and Student Experience, added:

“Having NCG behind Southwark College means we can share industry-leading expertise and insights to help us deliver high quality education.”

NCG is one of the largest not-for-profit education and training groups in the UK with seven colleges and two national training providers.
