College welcomes new Patron for Graphic Design and Visual Communication
Experienced industry professional, Gavin Scothorn is set to inspire students at @BSDCofficial (BSDC) as their new Patron of Graphic Design and Visual Communication.
The College has enlisted Gavin, Director of creative communications agency, Alive as industry patron to join the College’s impressive list of patrons across its broad range of curriculum areas.
BSDC’s network of patrons mean that students benefit from an industry-led curriculum, access to key industry contacts and the opportunity to work on live briefs for real companies. This supports the College in delivering its Skills Promise and ensuring that when students complete their course, they will be job ready with the transferable skills and qualities they need to make an impact in their chosen industry or profession.
Not only is Gavin a patron for the College, he is also BSDC alumni, having studied Design at the College himself before achieving a higher education degree in 1995. After setting up his first print shop in 1996 at the age of 19, he progressed to working for large London advertising agencies, working on national and international campaigns within the fashion advertising world.
Further on in his career, he worked in Birmingham where he headed up the creative studio for a burgeoning marketing agency and helped them bring to life campaigns and digital experiences for brands in the automotive and construction industry. Although design and creativity are still his passion, he understands the importance of sound business ethics and revels in the pursuit of new accounts and clients. He currently runs small boutique design and marcomms agency in Burton on Trent and works with local, national and international clients.
Gavin commented: “I studied Graphic Design at the College myself before starting my career, so being made a patron is a massive honour. Students already have access to expert training at the College but my role is to ensure they are ready from a commercial aspect. The sector is constantly changing and by delivering talks and live briefs, I can help students gain the experience and tips they need to be successful in the graphic design and visual communication industry.”
Emma Strange, Director of Creative at Burton and South Derbyshire College added: “Gavin has worked with the College for several years now, setting live briefs, doing portfolio reviews and delivering guest lectures. Becoming an official patron for the area was just a natural progression and we’re excited to welcome him on board. Gavin brings with him a wealth of experience in the graphic design industry and will be an extremely inspirational figure for our learners who are just starting out in their careers.”
