Listen to the frontline on education funding woes

Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Layla Moran MP has described the refusal of Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education, to meet with concerned headteachers as “shameful”.

It comes in light of the news that over 7,000 heads in England have written to 3.5 million families warning of ever-worsening budget shortages. In her own constituency of Oxford West and Abingdon, Layla Moran has spoken to staff whose schools can no longer afford to employ teachers five days a week.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said:

“It is shameful that Damian Hinds will not listen to the front line on such a fundamental issue, especially when we are clearly in the midst of a crisis over funding.

“Burying his head in the sand will do the Secretary of State no favours. When schools across England are asking parents for regular donations, how can he possibly say that the money going to our country’s schools is adequate?

“I call on the Conservative Government to begin an urgent listening exercise with frontline staff including headteachers, before this crisis gets any worse and hits communities even harder. We need proper funding for schools now.”
