School Standards Minister Nick Gibb

The proportion of pupils taking the core EBacc GCSE subjects that equip young people with the skills they will need for future success is at its highest level yet.

The percentage of pupils entering all five EBacc components – English language and literature, maths, the sciences, geography or history and a language – has hit the highest level since the measure was introduced, statistics released today show.

The statistics also show rises in the percentage of pupils entering languages and humanities as well as illustrating the achievements of free schools.

The statistics show:

  • Free schools have on average the highest scores at GCSE for pupil progress
  • Overall A level attainment has increased
  • The proportion of pupils entering all five EBacc GCSE subjects has gone up by 1.6 percentage points to 40% – the highest entry rate since the measure was introduced in 2010
  • And the proportion of pupils taking at least four out of the five EBacc subjects is now 86.5%
  • The entry rate in EBacc languages is up by 0.5 percentage points, bringing to an end a series of consecutive decreases
  • Entries into EBacc humanities have risen by 2.3 percentage points from 78.3% in 2018 to 80.6% in 2019.

The statistics released today provide transparency to parents looking to make informed decisions about their children’s education by illustrating the progress pupils make in schools and colleges as well as overall attainment and what pupils go on to do after they leave.

School Standards Minister Nick Gibb said:

“Standards continue to rise in our schools, with today’s data showing an increasing proportion of pupils taking the all-important core academic subjects at GCSE that make up the English Baccalaureate.  These subjects widen opportunities for young people and are key to social mobility.

“Parents now also have unparalleled levels of information to help them make decisions about the schools and colleges in their area. With free schools showing excellent results parents can feel especially reassured that more and more free schools are opening in communities all over the country.”
