BITC calls for business volunteers to act as mentors at modern languages drop

Call for more mentors as Modern Languages drop

Following BBC research showing a significant reduction in the number of young people studying modern foreign languages, Rachael Saunders, Education Campaign Director at Business in the Community said:

“Businesses have told us over and over that they want to recruit young people with a wide range of knowledge and skills. Languages are important, not just because they are useful to communicate with clients and customers and build global links, but because the ability to speak a second or third language gives you access to another culture and an alternative world view. Being able to look at language reflexively is an essential skill which is necessary in many areas of business.

“BITC is keen to work with the government and members to increase the number of business volunteers acting as language mentors to inspire young people and support their learning.”
