Positive feedback for Barry College

Learners at Barry College are some of the most satisfied in Wales and England, the latest feedback survey has found.

The results mirror findings by education and training inspectorate Estyn, which earlier this year awarded Barry College top marks for its commitment to meeting the needs and interests of the local community.

The College’s 2007-08 student satisfaction survey has found that 96% of learners are happy with their courses, up three points on the national benchmark. The figure is an improvement on last year, when 95% agreed that they were happy with their courses.

95% of Barry College’s learners agreed that “the teaching on my course is good”, six points higher than the national benchmark. 91% said they received feedback quickly after handing in work on time, a whopping 10 points higher than the average.

The College scored well with learners across a range of indicators, including how well courses were timetabled and planned, levels of support from student services and the suitability of the College’s facilities. Most of the results show improved satisfaction levels.

Some 85% of learners said Barry College’s learning resources centre helped them with their work, while 94% said its rooms were suitable for their courses and a further 94% agreed College equipment was of workplace standard. The national benchmark for these indicators were 79%, 85% and 81% respectively.

College Quality Manager Vanessa Morgan said: “I’m really happy that Barry College is up at the top when it comes to student satisfaction. The results reflect our commitment to Estyn’s Key Question Three, which relates to how well the learning experience we offer meets the needs and interests of learners in the local community.

”When Estyn announced its inspection results in the New Year we scored an outstanding, grade one for Key Question Three. This latest survey is further evidence of our work to ensure the courses we offer meet the needs of everyone in the community.”

Barry College Principal Paul Halstead said: “I’m delighted that the student survey has shown how much the learners enjoy studying at the College and that the support systems and standards of teaching are recognised as being very good.”
