Student wins Gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2018!

Georgia-Mae Fenton, gold medal winner

Congratulations to our BTEC Sport student Georgia-Mae Fenton who has won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, for the women’s uneven bars final.

On Sunday morning Georgia-Mae got into position to perform her incredible routine on the bars. Fenton’s routine secured her a fantastic score of 14.600 points, meaning her she had overtaken Canadian Brittany Rogers (14.200) and Georgia Goodwin (13.433) of Australia. Not only did Georgia-Mae achieve a gold medal, but she has also accomplished a silver medal after competing alongside the England’s gymnastic team.

The teenager, who learned her trade at Meapa Gymnastics Club, had high hopes on uneven bars going into the Games. Georgia-Mae commented, “I know the bars final is on April 8th because it’s my mum’s birthday. To medal on bars would be amazing.”

Georgia-Mae has accomplished so much at such a young age, with the 17 year old achieving numerous titles including, 2015 Junior British all-around bronze and bars champion, 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival team member, 2017 British Championships all-around 4th and bars silver, 2017 World Challenge Cup beam silver and now culminating with a gold and silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Sports Coaching & Performance Programme Manager, Chris Manley, commented, “We are very proud of the success that Georgia-Mae and the entire gymnastics team has had, and are very much looking forward to seeing her again to congratulate her for this fantastic achievement. Georgia-Mae is studying a Level 3 BTEC Sports course and on completion hopes to continue her studies, either at home or in the USA alongside her career as a professional gymnast. The college are very pleased to be able to support elite athletes in this way”.

Everyone at North Kent College is delighted and so proud of what Georgia-Mae Fenton has achieved and we look forward to continuing watching the rest of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
