Fundraising students donate to local residential home

Barnsley College students have raised funds and donated Christmas presents to Riverside Residential Care Home.

Business and AAT Accountancy students raised £78.50 by completing a sponsored walk earlier in the year and used the money to purchase food so the residents could enjoy a festive buffet and receive a gift each whilst watching videos of Barnsley’s yesteryears.

The project was designed as part of their course and it gave students the opportunity to develop their communication and problem solving skills whilst engaging with the local community.

Level 3 AAT Accounting student, Dylan Goff, 17, from The Common, Ecclesfield, said: “I’m glad to be involved in this project and helping others to have a lovely Christmas.”

Rachael Barton, Activities Co-ordinator at Riverside Residential Care Home, added: “The residents loved the activities that the students and staff organised. As many of the residents have dementia, they can remember things from their past, so showing the videos of Barnsley’s past is a great way to trigger memories.”
