Barton Peveril Sixth Form College have won a Sixth Form Colleges Association (SFCA) Award for Independent Learning, during an award ceremony held at The University of Nottingham on Wednesday 13th June.

The College was recognised on a national level for enabling students of all abilities to work independently, both inside and outside of the classroom. Headed by Barton Peveril’s Learning Support Team, students are supported at College through the use of Speech Recognition Software, access to Chromebooks during lessons, a dedicated Learning Support Google Site, the Barton Peveril Mental Wealth Tool and one-to-one support from a member of the Learning Support Team.

As a result of this support, students with declared learning support at Barton Peveril are now among the top 10% of all learners nationally.

Speaking on receiving the award, Barton Peveril Principal Jonathan Prest said: “I am delighted that the innovative approach the College has taken, to develop the skills of students to study independently, has been recognised nationally and it is a great tribute to our talented and hardworking staff. Learning how to learn is one of the most important lessons for life in a fast changing world, so to be recognised for preparing our students for university and future careers is very pleasing.”

Barton Peveril’s Director of Learning Support, Julie Stickland, also commented on the award: “I am thrilled that the Learning Support Department have been recognised for this award. The dedication and hardwork of all of the team, in fostering independence in young people, helps to remove some of the barriers that they face. Our focus on developing independence skills helps to ensure success in their studies.”

Current Barton Peveril Student Franio Van Wyk, who formerly attended Kings’ School and benefits from the College’s Learning Support programme, said: “The learning support department at Barton Peveril have motivated me towards being more independent in my learning, and in preparing me for the future. All the support that is provided is tailored to an individual’s needs, ensuring that no-one is put into a basic category, and is rather assisted in an ongoing process that ensures that each student’s potential can be reached, no matter what their difficulties may be.”
