From education to employment

Barton Peveril’s Princeton Student

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College graduate Joshua Wells

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College graduate Joshua Wells has begun studying at world-renowned Princeton University in New Jersey, United States of America, after finishing his studies at the College this year.

Wells is currently in his first year of study on the four year Bachelor of Arts Degree, where he intends to major in the School of Public Policy and International Affairs.

Princeton University Application Process

Wells, who joined Barton Peveril from Brookfield Community School, earned his place at the prestigious University after a rigorous application process:

The former student successfully applied for the Sutton Trust US Programme, which helps students in their pursuit of places in US Universities, in his first year of college. On the programme he prepared for his application to Princeton by sitting the ACT standardised admissions test and by attending trips in the United Kingdom, where he learned about US universities and their admissions processes.

Wells then attended a residential trip to the USA in the summer of 2019, where he furthered his knowledge of university education in the USA and experienced some of the country’s most reputable universities.

After his work on the Sutton Trust US Programme, Wells applied to Princeton with the help of staff at Barton Peveril. The student submitted an application essay, three letters of recommendation from the College, a profile of the College, and a transcript of his grades to Princeton University before attending a series of interviews conducted by Princeton graduates via Zoom, in London, and in Southampton.

After the year-long process, Wells was successfully offered a place to study at Princeton University in March 2020. The Barton Peveril graduate is now attending his lectures online, at home in Swanwick, until the Princeton campus reopens to students after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Astounded”

Speaking on his success, Joshua Wells said:

“I was astounded when I received the news that I had an offer from Princeton. After visiting the University, it became my dream. I want to thank the Careers Department at Barton Peveril and, specifically, Ros Laird for her great help through the entire process.”

Barton Peveril Careers Adviser, Rosalind Laird, commented on Wells’ achievement:

“Joshua optimizes the values of a Barton Peveril student: he is responsible, respectful, and committed to the highest standard of learning, effort and achievement. We are all so proud of what Joshua has achieved and wholeheartedly wish him every success for the future.”

Following his degree at Princeton University, Wells hopes to become involved with International Relations.
