From education to employment

A County Durham training provider has awarded funds after launching their own charity foundation

@_LearningCurve Group, based in Spennymoor, have raised over £60,000 in the past five years through the fundraising efforts of their staff and clients. Employees previously chose a ‘charity of the year’ to raise funds for, but they launched their own foundation to allow them to support multiple charities throughout the year.

The foundation, in partnership with the County Durham Community Foundation, allows charities, individuals and social enterprises to apply for funds and grants raised by the dedicated staff at Learning Curve Group. The foundation raises money for charities and social enterprises that match Learning Curve Group’s values; supporting causes that alleviate poverty, tackle underemployment and develop skills.

One of the causes that has benefited from the funds is Thomas Bewick School in West Denton, Newcastle and their school football team.

The school, part of the Prosper Learning Trust, provides a safe, supportive space for their students, all of whom have an autism diagnosis, so being able to benefit from funds from the foundation will help support pupils and help them feel safe in their community.

Head Teacher, Daley Barber-Allen said:

“we are so grateful for the support we have received from Learning Curve Group. It has helped us to form our very own football team, Thomas Bewick FC, and to kit them out with their own football strip, training tops and equipment to help them train. Being part of the team is helping some of our football enthusiasts to develop their physical skills, but it is also a fantastic opportunity for team members to practice their social skills and to enjoy their friendships outside of school time. It is lovely to see how being a part of Thomas Bewick FC has had a positive impact on the confidence and self-esteem of team members.”

Brenda McLeish, CEO of Learning Curve Group said:

“As our business continues to grow, we want to ensure we continue to give back to even more people, both in the local community and on a national basis, through causes that mirror our company values and help us transform lives.”

She continued: “People are at the centre of everything we do, so we’ve made an important decision to launch the Learning Curve Group Charity Foundation which means that more charities than ever before can benefit from our fundraising.”

Michelle Cooper, chief executive of County Durham Community Foundation, said:

“We are really proud to work with Learning Curve Group to maximise the impact of the team’s giving. It’s always a pleasure to see how much they contribute to the community and to recognise that they have built this generosity into the core of their business. At a time like this, when there is precious little to look forward to, how lovely for these children to have their own football team and strips to help them have fun and blow off some steam.”
