City & Guilds celebrates success of online testing

City & Guilds is celebrating the runaway success of GOLA (Global Online Assessment), an online programme that enables candidates to take exams in their own time and in any location.

The awarding body has seen over three million students logging in to take their tests online, which is also able to issue results as soon as the examination is over, removing agonising waiting times.

Chris Jones, Director-General of City & Guilds, said: "Reaching 3 million tests demonstrates that GOLA remains the benchmark in e-assessment and is unrivalled in the marketplace. The reach of GOLA, in terms of volumes across all sectors, including international, continues to support our aspirations to accelerate our growth."

GOLA was launched in 2002, and since then has successfully revolutionised the way candidates are assessed and marked. In its first year, roughly 65,000 candidates were tested using the service. Last year that figure soared to 862,000, with an average of 16,000 students logging on every week.

Mr Jones continued: "The use of GOLA has also enabled colleges, employers and training providers to forget rigid exam cycles, offer instant retakes, save time and money and engage with their learners in a whole new way."
