Welsh College Teams Up with Rugby Stars to Open New Sports Development Centre

English rugby: watch out! Yale College have launched a Rugby Development Centre in Wrexham in association with top Welsh rugby club, the Llanelli Scarlets.

The college expects the new rugby centre to follow on the success of its already well-established football and golf development centres, and the Llanelli Scarlets hope Yale students will play a big part in guaranteeing the team’s future success.

Yale’s Sports Development Centres allow talented youngsters to develop sporting skills at the same time as studying for academic qualifications. Students study at the college on a full-time course of their choice while receiving coaching in their sport.

Professional Magic

Viv Davies, Yale Assistant Director of Leisure, Lifestyle and Sport, played a key role in establishing the new centre. She said both staff and students were excited by the prospect of working with Welsh rugby giants, and hoped that some of their professional magic would rub off on the college’s own side.

“The link with the Scarlets will really benefit the students,” she said. “Gareth Jenkins, Scarlets Director of Rugby, has visited the College many times and with the help of his staff and guidance from other expert coaches, the Yale Rugby Team should develop into a team to reckoned with!”

The centre’s official launch was attended by former British Lions and Welsh scrum half Rob Jones, who treated the Rugby Development Centre’s students to a special skills coaching session at Wrexham Rugby Club afterwards.
