World record holder visits Barry College

Two times world record holder Peter Bray of Cardiff recently took time out of his busy schedule and work load as a security consultant in Iraq, to talk to students at Barry College.

The students from Saint Richard Gwyn and Barry Comprehensive schools are on a 14-19 Learning Pathways Public Services course, at Barry College.

The pathways courses give students the opportunity to study vocational courses and gain vital life skills, with Barry College, as a part of their normal school timetable.  The course gives the students the opportunity to learn about the uniformed public services and legal systems in Britain, in conjunction with their GCSEs.  A large part of the course also concentrates on Outdoor Pursuits.

Peter Bray was in college to share with pupils’ stories of his current experiences in Iraq, where he has served for many years as a close protection officer, after serving 24 years in the military and Special Forces.  The students had numerous questions for Peter, helping them to gain a real insight into how life really is out in Iraq.

Peter also gave an overview of how the military prepared him for his numerous world breaking expeditions, including the ‘2000 North Atlantic kayak Challenge’, when Peter became the first man ever to kayak across the North Atlantic, in a purpose built 27 foot kayak, solo and unsupported.  In 2005 he also led the first British circumnavigation by sea kayak, of South Georgia, in record breaking time.  It doesn’t end there though as the record breaking attempts continue with a planned solo and unsupported row of the North Atlantic scheduled for summer 2009, for which Peter requires sponsorship.  Information of these amongst many other expeditions undergone by Peter can be found on his website at www.peterbrayenterprises.co.uk.
