COLLEGE APPRENTICE SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARD

Chen Thompson, Apprentice Electrician, Wolverhampton Homes - Named Apprentice of the Year

An apprentice from City of Wolverhampton College has proved she is a bright spark after scooping a national award for her electrical skills.

Chen Thompson, an apprentice electrician with Wolverhampton Homes, was named Apprentice of the Year at the Housing Heroes Award, run by Inside Housing.

The 25-year-old earned the accolade for being a proud advocate for women working in a male dominated industry. On top of her outstanding results for her studies, Chen often chats to a wide range of people about her experiences and at schools to talk about why women should take on roles in construction.

Chen said: ā€œIt felt great to win the award and be recognised for all my hard work.ā€

Tutor Mike Wicket said: ā€œChen started the course late but in her first exam came top of the class. She has worked hard and really stood out ā€“ sheā€™s a star!ā€

Lesley Roberts, chief executive at Wolverhampton Homes, said: ā€œItā€™s fantastic to see our colleagues get recognised at a national level for the work they do. All of our colleagues go above and beyond to help our tenants and residents unlock their potential, and these awards show that we are achieving this through delivering skills and learning opportunities for both colleagues and residents.ā€

The Housing Heroes Awards aim to shine the spotlight on the teams and individuals that make housing such a vibrant and caring sector. Many of the awards celebrate the ā€œunsung heroesā€ of the housing world.
