IoTs specialise in offering higher technical education with a STEM focus, addressing skill gaps in priority economic sectors like digital, construction, manufacturing, and engineering.
The UK government introduced IoTs to tackle critical skill shortages by providing technical skills aligned with industry needs in key sectors.
The Department for Education jointly funds IoTs with local governments and employers, committing over £170 million in capital funding. However, employers also supply facilities, equipment and work placements.
IoTs offer qualifications from Level 4 to Level 6, including apprenticeships, national certificates/diplomas, Higher National Certificates/Diplomas, foundation degrees and bachelor’s degrees across technical subjects.
Most IoTs partner with universities to jointly develop and deliver technical degrees, while some have degree-awarding powers themselves. So, all IoT qualifications align with employer needs and national qualifications frameworks.
IoTs prioritise deep collaboration with employers, involving them in curriculum design, work-based training, and board representation to facilitate graduate hiring and ensure alignment with industry demands.
Institutes of Technology play a crucial role in equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed for today’s job market. By bridging education and industry, IoTs empower students to innovate and contribute effectively. Additionally, with hands-on learning and employer collaboration, graduates are well-prepared to drive economic growth. Embracing technical education, IoTs pave the way for skilled professionals to shape our world.
