From education to employment

SERC now offering electrical isolation course in response to demand

Renowned for working closely with industry to generate real business benefits, South Eastern Regional College (SERC) is once again delighted to announce news that they have launched a brand new Safe Isolation Procedure for Electrical Installations course.

The course offers employers and engineers working within the electrical related industries, practical guidance on the management of electrical safety, with emphasis on safe isolation procedures to be followed during construction and refurbishment projects, and during maintenance activities.

The training, certificated by Logic Certification Ltd, is offered at SERC’s award winning Environmental Skills Centre in Newtownards and incorporates the most up-to-date technology, which together with experienced and qualified staff, enables learners to undertake practical hands-on experience in state of the art, purpose built workshops.

Providing theory and practical-based assessments over one-day, the course covers areas including safe electrical isolation, electrical testing equipment, insulation resistance, live continuity, earth fault loop impedance and test disconnection times. The course is underpinned by the requirements laid down in the Electricity at Work Regulations and BS7671.

SERC Commercial Contracts Manager Elaine Flynn said “SERC has built up a strong reputation in providing training packages for local businesses and by adding this to our repertoire, enables us to offer a complete service to businesses in the local and surrounding areas as well as reinforcing our reputation as a dedicated training venue. As former employees within the industry, the tutors understand the concerns of engineers who need to fulfil the national requirements whilst working safely with electrical appliances.”

The course is already proving popular and as a result the college will be extending the offering over the coming months to enable more engineers to benefit from the expert training and assessment on offer.

SERC deputy head of school for construction and engineering services Paul Henry said: “When working with any electrical installation it is imperative that operatives apply the correct isolation procedure to prevent injury to themselves and others. We ran the first cohort in December with LM Services and feedback from the course has been extremely positive. With more emphasis being put on electrical competence, the course has been specifically tailored for engineers working in the electrical related industry such as plumbers, heating engineers, kitchen fitters, mechanical engineers and appliance installers.”

Successful course completion will lead to a certificate of competence for safe isolation from Logic Certification to help candidates demonstrate their electrical competency.

The course is was developed with support  from the Connected Programme which is managed by Colleges NI and funded by the Department for the Economy enabling collaboration between Universities and the Further Education sector in Northern Ireland with a primary focus on meeting the needs of business innovation.

SERC provides a variety of compliance training and assessment packages that can be tailored to suit individual requirements. For more information or to enrol please call Emma Finney on 07825 348467 or email [email protected]
