From education to employment

Barclays UK CEO responds to today’s Ofqual Computing/ICT Figures

Ashok Vaswani, Chief Executive of Barclays UK, said:

“Employees with advanced digital skills are vital to businesses today, and so this fall in the numbers of students enrolling for GCSE ICT and Computer Science is worrying.

“The Barclays Digital Development Index shows that the UK is lagging behind leading international economies terms of the number of computing students in higher education and those going on to pursue a career in technology.  This is despite the UK being shown by our research to rank joint second for the quality of our digital skills curriculum in compulsory education – behind only South Korea, and topping the list for use of innovative digital technologies in schools.

“The private, public and education sectors need to work together to encourage students into computing subjects. Recent cyber attacks highlight the importance of digital skills to businesses and society as a whole as well as the need for us all to protect ourselves online. We must ensure future generations are equipped with these skills to secure our position as a leading digital economy.”
