From education to employment

Former student shares his career success

Harrison Turner, a former Tameside College carpentry and joinery student, visited the college earlier this week to talk to construction students about his successful career.

Harrison, who is now a trainee manager with Willmott Dixon, talked about how he went from studying his passion of joinery to becoming a manager with the construction firm and the types of opportunities available.

After completing his carpentry and joinery course at the college, Harrison became an apprentice bench joiner and then applied to join the management trainee scheme with Willmott Dixon. Once he has completed the course in 2019 he will become a fully qualified construction project manager.

The students were also informed about the opportunities available at Willmott Dixon, once they leave the college and Harrison shared his experiences of Tameside College and how his teachers helped him to progress this far in his role.

Harrison said: “I am very thankful for the help and support that Tameside College have given me and it’s no doubt that they helped me achieve what I have so far. Working for Wilmott Dixon has been amazing and it’s hard to believe by the time I am 28 I will be in such responsible role and that’s all down to the hard work I’ve put in and the support I’ve received.”

Carl Shaw, curriculum leader for construction at Tameside College, said: “We are very grateful to have Harrison back with us again in a visitor capacity. He is a role model for all our current students, showing them what can be achieved if you put in 100%. I’d like to say thanks to him and Willmott Dixon for giving us this opportunity.”
