From education to employment

London South East Colleges celebrates its first year of student success

It was an evening of true celebration for London South East Colleges’ students on Tuesday (4 July), as the college held its inaugural annual awards ceremony.

London South East Colleges was formed last August, following the three-way merger of the former Bexley College and Greenwich Community College with Bromley College.

17 students received awards at the ceremony, all of whom have shown exceptional performance and effort in their studies this year. They were presented with their prizes by Apprentice-winner and TV presenter, Michelle Dewberry, who spoke to guests about her own rise to success, against the odds.

The winners represented the College’s Bromley, Bexley, Greenwich and Orpington campuses. They were nominated by their tutors and chosen from a range of subject areas, including business, public services, law, hospitality and engineering.

The College was delighted to welcome over 100 guests to the event, which took place at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup – a central point in London South East Colleges’ region.

Guests included The Mayor of Bexley, College Governors, Local Authority representatives, parents, education partners and employers.

Special guest Michelle Dewberry spoke about her own remarkable journey. Despite leaving school early with no qualifications, Michelle was determined to succeed in the world of business and now runs several IT companies alongside her TV and charity work.

Michelle said: “Hearing these students’ stories has been so inspiring and I commend all the award winners here tonight.

“It is so important for us all to stop and take a moment out of our busy lives to reflect on success. Everyone has a different story and a different set of challenges, but achievement should be celebrated and used to inspire one another.

“My advice is to set yourself targets and follow your dreams. The world is an exciting place and with enough drive and determination, you can achieve success.

“It was clear how much tonight meant to not only the winners, but to their friends and family too. I congratulate you all and wish you the very best.”

College Principal, Sam Parrett, presented her own award to a student who had achieved outstanding success this year.

This special award was given to Iwan MacKenzie, a Travel and Tourism student at the College’s Greenwich Campus.

Collecting his award, Iwan said“I have to say, I’m hugely shocked to receive this. I’m so glad I brought my mum and dad with me. They are literally brimming with pride right now.”

Principal of London South East Colleges, Sam Parrett, praised Iwan and the other award winners, saying:

“It has been a wonderful evening, hearing about our students’ exceptional achievements and successes.

“This is a particularly special year for us – the first as London South East Colleges. Bringing together three colleges has been no easy task but I thank both staff and students for playing their part in such a successful merger.

“And tonight’s event has been a great way to end the year. We are extremely grateful for all the support we have received and continue to receive from staff, stakeholders, governors, parents, students, employers and each Local Authority. Michelle was also a very inspiring host.

“Our college brings together communities, enabling people to gain the qualifications and skills they need to achieve career success. All our award winners are inspirational and set an amazing example to others – showing the dedication and commitment needed for success. I congratulate them and wish them all the very best for the future.”

London South East Colleges works with over 1000 employers across all curriculum areas. Four outstanding employers were recognised at the awards last night, for their ongoing support to the college and its students. This recognition went to – The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, London Borough of Bexley, Alison Price & Co. and RM&A Stewart.
