Students Smash It At Dearne Valley Colour Run

Dearne Valley College students and staff have put on an energetic and colourful display of the College’s positive impact on local communities by hosting a Colour Smash event to raise vital funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The event, organised by the Yorkshire Sport Foundation, saw hundreds of students and a number of brave staff members from colleges across South Yorkshire get covered in colour as participants threw paint powder at each other.

The thrilling event was the culmination of a week of activity supporting the Association of College’s ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign – shining a spotlight on the fantastic work of colleges across the country in allowing learners to achieve their future ambitions as well as calling for fairer funding across the FE sector.

Development Manager at Yorkshire Sport Foundation Debra Cummins said: “It’s fantastic that staff and students from colleges across South Yorkshire have come together to raise money for such a fantastic cause.  The Teenage Cancer Trust was the charity chosen by the students, and we hope the event raises money for the charity and even greater awareness of what they do.

“For us at Yorkshire Sport Foundation, it’s great to provide an opportunity for over 300 people to get out of the classroom, have fun being active and celebrate Love our Colleges week.”

Dearne Valley College Level 3 Health and Social Care student Rosanna Bailey managed four laps of the expansive sports field.

Rosanna said: “We’ve been taking part in the Colour Smash to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust; it’s a great event that has brought everyone together and created a good team spirit. We’ve had people from all different courses not just health and social care but people from mechanics and other subjects come together for the event.”

Level 2 Health and Social Care student Katie Levers was also involved in the fun event.

Katie added: “It’s the first time I’ve done a Colour Smash and it’s been really fun. We’ve

raised money for charity and shown the difference communities coming together can make.”

Dearne Valley College Assistant Principal and Campus Manager Cheryl Martin also got stuck in running through the field.

Cheryl said: “We were delighted to welcome hundreds of students from across the region to Dearne Valley College for what has been an amazing event.

“The students have really come together and shown the real difference that colleges can make in raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust; it has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the incredible sports facilities that our BTEC Level 2 and 3 Sport and Foundation Degree Sport Science students get to take advantage of every day!”
