“11Onze School” launched to help students master financial literacy

In its march towards educating the Catalan community about money matters and financial ecosystems, Barcelona-based fintech 11Onze has launched its “11Onze School” programme. Institut Cendrassos de Figueres in Gironais the first school to have received a training session.

The mission is to engage and educate young students to improve their financial literacy by teaching them about how money works and what’s the technology behind it.

“Financial literacy remains our key mission,” explained 11Onze Chairman James Séne. “After our successful launch of La Plaça  (private social network) platform which offers a range of information on money matters and future trends in the economy and banking, we decided to launch Fintech Talks for professionals and 11Onze School for young students.”

The idea was suggested by 11Onze’s La Plaça members, revealed Séne. “Impressed with the information being shared on La Plaça, a high school teacher asked us if we could offer a financial education session to his students. We decided to take it a step further and offer not only financial literacy sessions but also appoint 11Onze ambassadors in schools who will keep the financial literacy campaign going.

11Onze agents Mireia Cano and Coral Santacruz kicked off the initial session for the students at the Higher-Level Training Cycle in Transport and Logistics at the Cendrassos Institute in Figueres, Girona, to learn about fintech, key concepts of the economy and the various payment systems that exists today.

Mireia Cano, head of 11Onze agents, observed,

“Students exhibited fairly good knowledge and tremendous interest inthe world of cryptocurrencies, however, little knowledge about how money actually works.

“For young people, digital banking is no longer a mystery, although they don’t know much about all the processes behind it. As almost all of them have financial applications on their mobile phones, they are keen on financial education,” Cano explains.

Joan Medard Oriol Barris, professor, Institut Cendrassos de Figueres said,“We were delighted to have 11Onze offer this financial literacy session. It was quite popular. It expanded on the subject that I teach and covered key technologies used in financial institutions, financial instruments, payment and collection systems… topics that you don’t get to learn in your day-to-day life.”

“In the current environment, where we have to rely on ourselves to make important decisions such as which credit cards, mortgage offers or savings instruments to pick, the responsibility to educate oneself is paramount – both individually and collectively,” explained added Séne.

With the successful kick off of the 11Onze school programme, the community fintech aims to cover all schools in Catalonia within two years.
