New Appointment at Local LSC to Unite Training Providers

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Lincolnshire and Rutland has appointed its first Area Wide Inspection (AWI) Manager to co-ordinate activities towards improving 14-19 education.

Jonathan Poxon, who started in his new role earlier this month, will manage and report on the impact being made by projects supported by the Lincolnshire and Rutland AWI Post Inspection Action Plan. This plan was produced following an inspection by Ofsted and the Adult Learning Inspectorate towards the end of last year. The 14-19 Strategy Partnership, (ie the LSC, Connexions and the local education authorities for Lincolnshire and Rutland) are charged with monitoring the progress of the plan and documenting the steps made to improve participation, retention and achievement in local 14-19 education provision for government ministers. Areas of improvement identified in the inspection are implemented through projects as part of the Action Plan. These include raising post-16 levels of participation and success in education and training, ensuring that learning is consistently challenging for all students and trainees and promoting the further development of key skills in Work-based Learning. Whilst the 14-19 strategy was launched less than a year ago, it is already seeing significant developments between learning partners and how they work together.

“There has been much more collaboration between partners since the launch of the AWI Action Plan; they have been working together on post-14 issues and sharing best practice ideas,” said Jonathan. “One of the recommendations of the local AWI was that partners and providers of education should work together more closely, so this was one of the first things we had to address. Developing these relationships is fundamental to the success of the Action Plan.”

Jonathan’s role involves considerable interaction with partners and providers of local 14-19 education – ranging from those responsible for the strategic direction education for the two counties, to 14-19 area co-ordinators and local deliverers. Jonathan will work out of the LSC’s offices in North Hykeham. He was previously employed with the LSC as an European Social Fund Resource Manager. Prior to that appointment in 2001, Jonathan worked as a Quality, Health & Safety Manager at the Training & Enterprise Council (TEC).
