From education to employment

Barnsley College students are Hallam Heroes

Barnsley College students are celebrating winning three awards in the Hallam Hero Awards 2019.

Business Administration students, Azaria Lawton, Emma Hubbard and Georgia Nield, triumphed in the Customer Service, Apprentice of the Year and Student of the Year categories respectively at the event held at Kenwood Hall, Sheffield.

Azaria began her Level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship at Barnsley College in November 2018. She is employed as an Apprentice Secretary at Barnsley Sixth Form College where she provides an excellent front-of house service on reception and has displayed a willingness to carry out new tasks and improve her skills.

Azaria said: “I’m really pleased that I was nominated for this award and it’s nice to know that my work is recognised and appreciated by my colleagues.”

Emma began her Business Administration Apprenticeship in February 2018, completed her Level 2 qualification ahead of schedule and is now already halfway towards gaining her Level 3 qualification. Emma has grown in ability and confidence since beginning her apprenticeship and her skills and attitude have earned her a permanent position as Health and Safety Assistant at the College.

Emma added: “I feel very proud and shocked to have won this award. I worked really hard to complete my Level 2 Apprenticeship and I’ve been rewarded by securing permanent employment which is great.”

Georgia joined Barnsley College’s HR department as a Level 2 Business Administration Apprentice in January 2017 with no experience or knowledge of Human Resources, but she showed commitment to her learning by attending workshops which developed her knowledge whilst building her confidence and competence within the job role. Georgia completed her Level 2 Apprenticeship and progressed onto the Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship before securing a permanent role of HR Assistant.

Georgia also had another reason to celebrate when she was crowned the winner of the Apprentice of the Year award in the Barnsley Chronicle’s Young Champion Awards 2019.

Georgia said: “I was really shocked when I was nominated for these awards and to win them feels amazing. I worked really hard to complete the Level 2 and 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship and secure a permanent job at the College and I’m delighted with my achievements.”
