Today’s Education in the Media blog looks at the coverage of equalities teaching in Birmingham.

Equalities Education

Today, Friday 26 July, the BBC is reporting on the subject of teaching LGBT equalities in schools. This follows a recent BBC Panorama programme, which looked in detail at the debate around Relationship and Sex Education, specifically in Birmingham, where there have seen several protests over the issue.

The story ran on Radio Four’sToday programme and BBC Breakfast this morning and is also running on BBC News channel and BBC Online.

A Department for Education spokesperson said:

It is wrong to suggest that pressure has been applied to Parkfield to stop teaching about equality. Any suggestion that the dispute should be kept out of the media was absolutely not an attempt to silence the school, but a bid to bring an end to protests, encourage consultation and ensure tensions weren’t further inflamed by sensationalist coverage. We’ve been working intensively with the school and parents to encourage positive and constructive dialogue to help resolve this issue.
