From education to employment

Kirklees College building for the future with Travis Perkins

Kirklees College is pleased to announce a new partnership with the UK’s largest builders’ merchants, Travis Perkins.

Based at the Brunel Construction Centre in Huddersfield, the Kirklees College Construction Department specialises in delivering trade-focused courses and facilities including brickwork, joinery, plumbing, electrical and plastering.

This new partnership was initiated by brickwork lecturer, Paul Whitaker and involves sponsorship and supply of materials for the newly refurbished bricklaying workshop at the Brunel Construction Centre.

Travis Perkins has donated a large range of building materials and unused stock to aid the brickwork and plastering modules and help students perform on-site construction tasks in the classroom.

Kirklees College Curriculum Area Manager, Nick Taylor said: “Teaming up with Travis Perkins will enable the college to enhance its provision to benefit our students and staff.

“We are really keen to work with local businesses to improve our students’ experience at college and add to their employability skills. We would really like to thank Travis Perkins for their sponsorship and support.”

Tracey Rushforth, Assistant Manager of the Barnsley branch, said: “Travis Perkins is a business which prides itself on supporting the construction industry and when Paul contacted us, we were more than happy to work with the college to support the training of the construction workers of the future.

Travis Perkins believe in supporting young builders, so this relationship with Kirklees College is a great way for us to help secure skills for the future of the industry. We’re looking forward to working with the students and putting them on the path to a successful career in construction.”

Kirklees College has also launched a new HNC course in Construction and the Built Environment which is due start in January 2020 at the Brunel Construction Centre.
