Our NEW £3.5 Million Construction and Automotive Skills Centre is Officially Open!

PRESS RELEASE                                                           16/05/2016

Our BRAND NEW £3.5 million Construction and Automotive Skills Centre is now officially open.

The state-of-the-art new build replicates real trade workshops and provides students with all the professional tools, equipment and guidance to prepare them with the practical skills they need to be successful in their chosen industry.

The centre, home to students currently studying, Plumbing, Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating, Carpentry and Motor Vehicle was officially opened by Grantham and Stamford MP and Minister of State for Skills Nick Boles who was hugely impressed by what he had seen.

Mr Boles said “As a minister there is nothing better than being able to refer to great performance in your own constituency and say to others, ‘why can’t you do it more like that?’

Principal Janet Meenaghan said the facility, which features eco-friendly air-source heating and grey-water recycling, is one of the best of its kinds in the country.

Mrs Meenaghan said: “The plan began more than three years ago, we wanted was a modern, high-quality learning environment for our students and that is what we got. It’s the best construction and automotive facility I’ve seen at any college – and I’ve seen a lot.”

Previous to the new build Construction students practiced their trade in off-site workshops in Stamford. Bring all trade courses back to the main campus means Construction students can now reap the benefits of college life as well as learning in an industry standard £multi-million facility.

Plumbing lecturer Richard Hodgett said: “The training we can offer our students now is fantastic. We’ve got more space, better equipment and can simulate real-world situations which our students will face when they start working for real.”

Plumbing student Matt Reece, 19, said: “ We’ve been in here a few weeks now and there’s so much more space, and we have lots of useful new equipment like extractors to use when soldering, which we didn’t have before.”

Motorcycle lecturer Matthew Baker said “The set up we have here is very advanced. Even if our students go to university after here, and don’t start work for another three years, the kit they’ll be working with then, in the workplace as employed mechanics, will be familiar because we’ve got it here already.

If you’re hands on and want to gain real experience the brand new centre for yourself, New College Stamford offer courses in Brickwork, Carpentry, Construction, Plumbing, Motor Vehicle and Motor Cycle. For more information call 01780 484311.
