Pendleton Sixth Form College launch their Centre of Excellence in Science

On October 18, the college will be launching their Centre of Excellence in Science.

Pendleton Sixth Form College offer world-class teaching. The college boasts 15 highly trained teachers within the department. Five have PHds and seven are A-level examiners in physics, chemistry and biology, making them the perfect people to prepare young people for a career in the science field. 

The college has an excellent track record of progression, with many students going onto study medicine, physics, chemistry and a wide range of other scientific degrees at Russell Group universities such as Durham, Manchester and Liverpool, each year.

Joshua Kelly, former Prestwich High School pupil, completed his A-levels at Pendleton this summer. He gained one of the highest sets of results in the country, with his A* grades in chemistry and physics securing him a place at Imperial College London, a first-class university for engineering.

The college also has unparalleled success vocationally, having won BTEC Science Student of the Year in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2017. This year’s winner, Maryam Taher, also won the coveted Overall BTEC Outstanding Student of the Year accolade, and has gone on to study biomedical science at the University of York, on a scholarship.

Science courses are designed to offer the maximum chance of success and additional support includes enrichment and society events to benefit budding doctors, dentists and engineers, and to promote careers in all fields.

During their time at Pendleton, students are invited on exciting and educational trips including a funded exchange programme to Germany, visits to CERN in Geneva, explorations of energy supplies in Iceland, forensic science investigations at the University of Central Lancashire and visits to the National Space Centre and Jodrell Bank Observatory. 

Extra-curricular activities include Physics XL which prepares students for the Physics Olympaid, Nuffield Research Placements are available during summer and Saturday Chemistry Club aims to aid studies further. 

The college has also invested £1 million over 2 years to deliver the very best facilities.
