Success at GMCG awards for college

Students representing Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College claimed four, out of a possible eleven, top places at this year’s Greater Manchester College’s Group (GMCG) competitions.

Hospitality, travel and tourism, digital media and construction students claimed the top prize for their category. They were joined by fellow students who won individual prizes in: enterprise, engineering, art and design.

Each year over 1,000 students from ten Greater Manchester colleges take part, competing against one another in subject categories. The competitions include a range of activities based around their chosen course, from computer aided design to creating a dessert.

Competition categories included: health and social care, digital media, construction, hair and beauty, engineering, art and design, enterprise, music and performing arts, travel and tourism and sports and public services. Each college from GMCG hosts one of the competitions each year. This year it was Tameside Colleges turn to host the construction competition, supported by local construction businesses as guest judges.

Jackie Moores, principal at Tameside College, said: “I am immensely proud of all that our students have achieved in the GMCG skills competitions this year. Competitions such as this are really important for students to take part in as it gives them experience outside the classroom and teaches them about working under pressure. I also have to thank our construction department who hosted the construction skills competition this year, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and the teachers and support staff across the ten colleges whose work got us here today.”
