The Future Looks Sweet for South Eastern Regional College student Keely

SERC student and entrepreneur, Keely Sherry, from Lisburn, proudly poses with her first wedding cake created at her new business venture SoBake.

South Eastern Regional College (SERC) student, Keely Sherry has followed her passion for baking and founded her own business.

Keely (21) from Lisburn, began her culinary journey at the College’s Lisburn Campus following her A-levels by enrolling on the Level 2 in Professional Bakery, then progressing to Level 3 in Professional Patisserie and Confectionery before setting up her enterprise SoBake.

Keely said, “From a young age, you would always find me cooking and baking. Enrolling at SERC gave me the chance to develop the skills and provided the inspiration needed to pursue a career in culinary arts. One of my most memorable experiences at SERC was when I had the opportunity to travel abroad as part of the course. It was amazing learning from top international patisserie chefs and I got to experience different styles of baking.”

Having just celebrated its first anniversary, SoBake is going from strength to strength. Keely’s culinary prowess has her booked out in advance, with everyone wanting her to create bespoke occasion cakes from gender reveals to birthdays.

Keely added, “My course at SERC gave me the confidence to start my business. My lecturer, Ruth Doherty, encouraged me to work hard and take every opportunity possible to practise my craft. A year ago, I turned a hobby into a viable business and am doing something I love.

She continued, “The best part of my job is seeing the joy my cakes bring to my customers. The most rewarding cake I’ve made so far was a wedding cake. I felt honoured that someone would put their trust in my skills to bake a cake for their special day.”

Keely is currently completing a Foundation Degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management with Specialisms at SERC’s Bangor Campus whilst she continues to build her business.
