TV’s ‘the governess’ delivers a welcome opportunity for Tameside College students

TV celebrity Anne Hegerty paid a visit to Tameside College recently to present a brand new adapted minibus to the college’s aspirations department.

Anne, who is well known for appearing on television programmes, The Chase and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, presented the ‘keys’ to the bus to Jackie Moores, college principal and delighted students.

The Lord’s Taverners is the UK’s leading charity for youth cricket and disability sports. It has supported sporting opportunities for young people since 1950 and its members include Sir Alistair Cook and Sir Michael Parkinson.

The minibus, which has been specially adapted for students with disabilities, will now allow students from the college’s aspirations department to take part in sporting and enrichment activities offsite and can be driven by teachers without a large vehicle license.

Anne has close links with the Lord’s Taverners, who invited her to attend the ceremony.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted to help present this minibus to aspirations students. It will make such a tremendous difference to their college lives and I believe that the Lord’s Taverners do an amazing job for young people across the UK.”

Jackie Moores, principal at Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College, said:

“Thanks to the generosity of the Lord’s Taverners, Tameside College can offer a wider range of opportunities to our students. The bus will give students better access to a number of activities outside of the college. This will improve their confidence and independence greatly.”

The aspirations department at Tameside College is purpose-built for students with learning difficulties and disabilities, and is specially adapted to give them the best possible opportunity to progress.
