From education to employment

Engaging ‘at risk’ and ‘hard to reach’ young people with music

A short documentary by FE News exploring the power of music in engaging ‘at risk’ and ‘hard to reach’ young people. We chat to Matt who uses music in a secure children’s home for 11-17 year olds, to enable at risk youth to see an alternate route in their lives.

Matt explains that traditional therapy often does not work with his hardest to reach young people, who are often from a highly abused or abusive background. Matt explains how they use music to enable their hardest to reach youth to be able to ‘tell their story’

FE News then talks to Jim Peters from Sound Gallery about innovative ways to engage young people in the music industry. Sound Gallery provide work experience and pre- apprenticeship volunteering opportunities in music for young people. Sound Gallery inspire young people and provide an insight into the music industry by encouraging young music artists to explore their talent, work experience opportunities in a live studio, live stage, working with professional musicians.

We hope you enjoy the film and it can provide a few ideas on how to engage ‘at risk’ and hard to reach young people in pre-apprenticeship and youth work programmes. Please click on the video below:
