More than 150 pupils from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire schools attended the Big Bang Near Me science and technology day, at a newly opened science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) Centre at Nottingham College on 25 January.

The event at the DANCOP Nottingham College STEM Centre saw the pupils taking part in exciting, engaging, and unusual activities to help spark an interest in STEM careers.

From taking part in a giant tyre challenge with the Army, to boarding a double decker STEM bus, and from programming robots, to learning about the science behind make up brands, pupils gained lots of valuable insight into a vast range of careers.

Zanna Mitchell, DANCOP Project Lead at Nottingham College, said: “We were pleased to welcome representatives from the British Science Association, University of Derby, Boots, the armed forces, and Atomic Science. They really helped showcase the hugely varied opportunities open to young people in STEM areas.”

The event was delivered in conjunction with Learn by Design, as part of a UK-wide programme led by EngineeringUK, with the aim of bringing science and engineering to life for young people.

The STEM Centre is also now available for school groups to book STEM activity sessions for their pupils. Schools who are interested in finding out more can visit nottm.co/schoolsSTEM or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
