#NationalCarersWeek Helps Champion the Unsung Caring Apprentices @PrioryGroup

Suzanne Hay from Bourne started an Apprenticeship at Abbey Court care home, which is managed by Priory Adult Care, in April 2019. The Apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with leading training provider Qube Learning.

Suzanne’s desire to work in care came after her mum was taken into a home to be treated for Parkinson’s and Dementia, where she was overwhelmed by the kindness her mum received during the last stages of her life. Before embarking on a career in care, Suzanne worked as a receptionist and then cared for her mum at home. Her natural ability to look after someone came as second nature and she is now enjoying making life comfortable for many patients at Abbey Court.

Having just started her Apprenticeship, Suzanne finds expanding her expertise very rewarding. She knows that her knowledge will positively impact individuals who come to Abbey Court. The Apprenticeship appealed to Suzanne as it enabled her to take part in a practical programme, gaining valuable experience and guidance in her chosen industry whilst being mentored in her training by the OFSTED grade 2 (Good) rated organisation, Qube Learning.

With an NVQ2 complete and the beginning of her NVQ3 underway, Suzanne comments that ‘a lot has changed’ and she has embraced the challenge and never looked back. The combination of practical work and training has given Suzanne the benefit of being able to put the learnings into practice, given her the confidence and qualifications to succeed and feel capable when caring for patients. 

Commenting on her work, Suzanne says

    “As carers we put all our energy into making sure others feel safe and comfortable, and National Carers Week, 10^th – 16^th June, is a great excuse to champion those in the profession! An Apprenticeship was the best way for me to learn about the care industry and since starting the programme, I have found working in care not only satisfying but interesting. The programme provides me with a formal academic qualification along with solid and practical work experience, all of which I can use in the future.

“Please take a moment to celebrate this credible date and the hard work we put in to help others. We believe in quality care for those who need it, and further education and training can enable us to be the best.”

Looking ahead to the future, Suzanne wants to continue in the same area of work. She is keen to develop further and grow at Priory Adult Care, and most importantly fulfil her passion of looking after people.
