University of Law offers work experience as Instagram competition prize

The University of Law (ULaw) has partnered with top law firms and businesses across the country to help aspiring lawyers and business professionals gain much needed work experience via an Instagram competition.

The National Work Experience competition will provide the opportunity to win work experience in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Reading.

Gateley PLC, the first UK full-service firm to be listed on the stock market in 2015, will be offering three placements in Reading, Nottingham and Birmingham, whilst in London leading Global professional services recruitment consultants, Morgan McKinley, will be offering invaluable business experience.

Thrings LLP will give students the chance to shadow an equity partner and spend time with trainees in Bristol, a fantastic opportunity to see a firm from two very different perspectives.  Fletcher’s Solicitors in Manchester are offering a placement for students interested in specialising in personal injury or medical negligence.

Students in Leeds will benefit from a week at Shoosmiths and will be able to see first-hand the awarding winning service the firm provides for its clients.

The first round of the competition requires entrants to share an Instagram post, photo or video, with a caption about who inspires their career goals. The hashtag #Uinspire must be used along with mentioning the desired location of the work experience. @U_Law must also be tagged in the post. This competition round closes on 29 November.

The final round of the competition consists of telephone interviews with five finalists per University campus, chosen by ULaw’s Domestic Student Recruitment team, and the winner will be announced on 13 December.

John Watkins, Employability Director at ULaw, said:

“Work experience is a valuable complement to academic achievement – many employers will find that the former allows applicants to stand out more than the latter. Employers place high value on work experience in CVs and also enjoy giving students opportunities to participate – it brings their skills to life.

“We are proud to work with a variety of firms and businesses dedicated to supporting students and hope that this helps them to develop their career paths.”
