In a league of their own! Both the Eccles Sixth Form College men’s and women’s football teams take their respective titles

Both the Eccles Sixth Form College Men’s First Football Team, and the college’s talented women’s side, have won the 2018/19 AOC Sport North West League, beating out all of the competition from across the region and proving that Eccles has the very best sports teams in the area.

The Men’s first team took the league title with a convincing final day 5-0 away win to Coleg Menai, last month.  The league conquest concluded an impressive season for the team which saw them win 15/18 of their matches, draw two and only lose one game.

The college’s women’s side also came out at the top of their league, with the dramatic victory coming down to the final game. However, after a 3-2 win against Bolton Sixth Form College, they managed to retain their title for another year.

The girls had some impressive wins throughout the season, which began last September, including a 9-1 win against Coleg Menai in their opening game, an 8-2 win against neighbours Bolton Sixth Form College and a 5-2 victory against Loreto College.

Adrian Thorrington, Curriculum Leader for Sport and Public Services, said: “The teams have worked incredibly hard this year and to win both titles is a fantastic achievement. We are really proud of all our sports teams here at Eccles Sixth Form College, but this is a particularly special moment for all staff and students within the department.”

Eccles Sixth Form College pride themselves on their incredible sports provision, which has become renowned throughout Greater Manchester. Not only do they have state-of-the-art facilities including a 4G AstroTurf pitch and a high-tech sports laboratory, but they also pride themselves on their very unique partnership with the Manchester United Foundation.

Students studying sport at the college can benefit from trips to the AON Training Complex at Carrington, and visits to Old Trafford. In the past, students have had the opportunity to train with and learn from Manchester United first-team players and coaches, enjoy private stadium tours, access first-class skills coaching and have even had the opportunity to win and earn tickets to games, and secure paid work at the ground.
