From education to employment

Barking & Dagenham College painting and decorating students create NHS tributes

The overall winner of the painting and decorating competition was 25 year old Callum Atkins from Romford for the creativity and flair of his entry

The painting and decorating department at Barking & Dagenham College (@BarkingCollege) ran a competition for students to showcase what they’d learnt this term.

Teachers thought it would be good to have a NHS theme for the competition so that the students could show their appreciation for the great work of the NHS.

Elaine Dewar, Learning Resource Officer, explained: “We also thought it would be good to celebrate the students’ progress for the term.”

Elaine approached educational supplies company Tilgear, who were happy to support the College and provided prizes of quality brushes and spirit levels for the winners. The College also provided the winners with Amazon gift vouchers.

20 students from three different classes entered the competition. They created their own designs incorporating the NHS and rainbow colours. A winner and runner up were chosen from each class.

The overall winner was 25 year old Callum Atkins from Romford for the creativity and flair of his entry. Callum commented: “I decided to design it based on what the NHS is –  the workers, the nurses and doctors and fitted the symbolic rainbow colours into the idea. I was so pleased to find out I won; I’m grateful to my tutor Geoff Hall for his support.”
