Eight young people have had their eyes and minds opened to the world of modern art thanks to a unique workshop held at Tate Liverpool.

The Demystifying Modern Art workshop gave the apprentices, aged between 17 and 20, an introduction to art from the Tate collection and to key themes in art over the last century through a series of talks and activities. Most of the participants who attended had little previous knowledge of modern art.Workshop tutors, Jessie Blindell and Laura Edwards, led them through a day of guided gallery tours, team discussions on specific work by artists such as Picasso and Degas, and practical exercises. They learned about historical context and different perspectives, how to think outside the box and increase confidence in their own personal interpretations of modern art.

Heather Lee Zeis, a 20 year-old apprentice hairdresser with Training Plus Merseyside was one of the participants. As well as enjoying the insight into modern art, she feels the workshop has helped her on a more fundamental level:

“The workshop was a lot of fun. I’ve realised there’s more to art than first appearances. I’ve also found that since learning about different perspectives in art, I’m putting more thought into things.”

Demystifying Modern Art is just one of a series of workshops available to local apprentices thanks to the ESF-funded Capital of Culture Badged Apprenticeships programme, which highlights the exciting creative opportunities Liverpool has to offer. Other workshops include animation, digital photography and radio production.
Jo Rymer of Greater Merseyside Learning Provider Federation who has organised all the Badged Apprenticeships workshops commented:
"These workshops are a great opportunity for young apprentices to benefit directly from Liverpool’s Capital of Culture title with some hands-on training in exciting cultural industries ”
