Barnsley College Catering and Hospitality tutor, James Key, has won the Mentor Chef of the Year Award for supporting and mentoring former student, Rhys Inman, at the Craft Guild of Chefs Graduate Awards 2019.
The Graduate Awards is open to young chefs aged 23 and under who are currently in the workplace, developing and testing their culinary skills. Regarded as ‘one of the hardest skills tests in the industry’, Rhys was one of 15 chefs who undertook the final exams after completing an online entry form and regional heats in Birmingham.
James won the Mentor Chef of the Year Award after been nominated by Rhys for his support during the competition and throughout his time at College. James provided Rhys opportunities at College which included cooking for the Conservative Party Conference and the Queen’s 90th birthday, and helped him become a Chef de Partie at Shears Yard in Leeds.
James said: “The Graduate Awards showcase the best of young talent and Rhys has done himself and the College proud. Rhys worked extremely hard throughout the tournament and dedicated himself to the opportunities he was provided. He has continued to stay in touch with us at College and it’s absolutely fantastic when you see ex-students achieve and progress into young professionals.”
Rhys added: “The skills I learnt during my time at Barnsley College were invaluable and James and the tutors treat me like a professional. I feel that my course prepared me for the workplace and equipped me with unique cookery techniques I used at the tournament. James was a big help in keeping me calm and giving me guidance on the tasks.”
