Pupils get to grips with politics on “awe-inspiring” tour in the capital

Staffordshire pupils got a rare view of what it takes to work in the bustling heart of the UK’s political arena with a trip to the capital.

With the political debate over Brexit still continuing to consume the headlines, it was a perfect time for the Student Leadership Team from The Hart School in Rugeley to visit the Houses of Parliament for a special “awe-inspiring” tour.

The pupils got to see inside Parliament, the House of Commons, the Lords’ Chamber, witnessed the Speaker’s precession into the chamber, took part in a debate workshop, and even went on to create their own mock bill and practice how to turn it into law.

And that’s not all. The schoolchildren, which included A Level Politics pupils from the school’s Sixth Form, also met Cannock Chase MP, Amanda Milling, and took part in a Q&A session with her topics of interest.

Reward for being fantastic school role models

The trip was a reward for the Student Leadership Team members being fantastic school role models and providing a vital link between staff and students.

The Hart School Principal Chris Keen said: “This special visit was organised as a reward to recognise the team’s hard work and commitment to their roles so far, and to help to improve their knowledge and understanding of how democracy and government works.

“All of the students conducted themselves impeccably and were fabulous school ambassadors.

“We hope to one day to be able to visit one of our pupils in a future role in the Houses of Parliament, which each of these pupils has the ambition and the drive to achieve.”

The Hart School is part of Creative Education Trust and was rated Good by Ofsted in April 2018.
