Rotherham College Performance student secures summer scholarship in Barcelona

SkillsWorld LIVE is back

Paige Carter is a Level 3 Production and Performing Arts student, who will have the incredible opportunity to study and train performance at Institution of Arts Barcelona (IAB).

The opportunity for a scholarship at IAB was highlighted in one of Paige’s singing lessons, with tutors encouraging students to write an expression of interest. Paige explained, “At first I was confused and had to ask my sisters advise as I feel I’m not academically very strong. However, once I had sent off my expression of interest, the whole buzz about the scholarship had died down, and I began to ask every couple of weeks about when we would find out, as I was so anxious! I knew it was an opportunity that I did not want to let go of.”

The scholarship is for a summer intensive at IAB, where students from 42 different countries come to study and train in performing arts. Activities will include developing new dance skills and a variety of dance styles, which will be demonstrated in a final performance.

Paige said, “From the scholarship I intend to gain independence and this will definitely be helpful in the future, as I will soon be moving to Blackpool to continue my training at Phil Whistons Theatreworks. I also believe that taking part in an intense week of training to result in a final performance could help me in my future career, where I may be need to learn choreography in a short space of time.”

Paige advises students looking to get into performing arts to not be afraid of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Paige added, “I think the best thing I could have ever got from my whole experience at Rotherham College is resilience and without that I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“I recommend the course to people who fully know that performance is what they want to do and are prepared to work extremely hard and use the opportunities to the fullest advantage. The tutors are amazing and the support and advice they can give is if incredible – they have extremely valuable industry experience and you won’t find tutors more caring.”
