Students hit top grades in English and maths

GCSE students at The Manchester College (@TheMcrCollege) are celebrating after achieving some of the College’s best ever results in English and maths.

Students achieved an overall pass rate of 100 per cent in English and 97.87 per cent in maths, with a significant number of students achieving a strong high grade.

In English, 46.5 per cent of students achieved a strong high grade (9-4, the equivalent of A*-C) which is up from 36.2 per cent in 2020. In maths, 45.53 per cent of students received a strong high grade, up from 35.78 per cent in 2020.

Declan Haslam is one student celebrating after gaining a Grade 9 in English, the highest possible result, and securing a place at the University of Law.

The 21-year-old took time out of education following secondary school due to mental health issues but returned to the College to take his GCSE English alongside an Access to Law, Politics and Society course with higher education provider UCEN Manchester. He will start a law degree in September, then plans to study a Masters in Law before becoming a barrister.

He said: “I would recommend The Manchester College and UCEN Manchester to anyone because no one will judge you and they will be accepting of who you are as a person. You will receive all the help you need and more to achieve your goals, and the teachers are the most helpful I have ever encountered.”

Principal Lisa O’Loughlin commented:

“Grade 4 GCSE English and maths are essential requirements for many careers, so I am delighted that so many of our students have obtained the grades they require to achieve their ambitions. Overall, these are great results for the College, with many individual stories of students exceeding the grade 4 benchmark by several grades.

“With the disruption we have faced over the past 18 months due to the pandemic, we are really proud of what the students have achieved. Their success is a real testament to their hard work and dedication, a result of which will be that more doors will open for them in terms of career opportunities as they continue their journey to becoming the next generation of industry excellence.”
